Session Title: Native Mobile Apps without AIR

Description: Yes, building native mobile applications can be done with Flex and ActionScript. But more importantly it can also be done without Adobe AIR. And you can deploy these applications to Android, iOS, Symbian and Windows Mobile. It’s called OpenPlug and it works with the Flex SDK. BYOL (Mac or PC) and you’ll deploy an app in a few minutes.

On3 is very proud to be a sponsor of Defrag this year, for so many reasons, but mainly because we get to support the women attendees and speakers with a women-only networking lunch!

Being a woman in high tech puts you in the minority, for sure, being a women-owned small business in this space is even more rare! Because of this, hosting these types of events has become a priority for Mollie Rusher, the president and majority owner of On3. Waffles, <whiteSpace>, and Women is a women-only networking group that meets, you guessed it, over breakfast – usually at high tech conferences. When the events started to break from that venue theme, the group was renamed to “The Click” – think: the sound of typing on a keyboard, the gesture, a mouse, a group of people with similar interests and goals, or the sound of our pretty shoes (should we chose to wear them).

Defrag is also working with other organizations on some scholarship programs for women entering high-tech college programs – very nice!

Here’s a little bit about Defrag as a conference (i.e. the other reasons we’re thrilled to be a part of it):
Defrag started in 2007 as a forum for exploring information overload and building implicit tools for the web. In years 2-4, Defrag’s focus shifted to things like enterprise collaboration, social media and big data. As Defrag enters its 5th year, it has firmly established itself as one of the premiere thought leader discussions about “what’s coming next” in technology, where Defrag’s time horizon is usually looking out 18-24 months.

Defrag is about exploring the tools and technologies that intersect around the data deluge. As such, Defrag is concerned with topics like:

• Big Data
• Analytics
• Business Intelligence
• Enterprise 2.0/Social Computing
• Semantic Web
• Social Media
• Cloud Computing
• Mobile applications
• Community Management
• Next Level Discovery
• Social Marketing & CRM

At Defrag, we’ll combine strategic keynotes from authoritative voices with tactical, on the ground implementation steps. Defrag is focused on accelerating the ‘aha’ moment.

Event Details

When: November 9-10, 2011

Where: Omni Interlocken: 500 Interlocken Blvd, Denver (Broomfield), Colorado 80021

Cost: $1495

What: 20 Keynotes over 2 days with 1 hour of additional breakout sessions each day (including one by our very own, Mollie Rusher), and a kick-ass evening reception.

The swag bag is going to be amazing… oh, okay, so will the speakers, venue, and conference be as a whole! We highly recommend this one!

Combining several existing DHTML sites, Adobe Flex and LiveCycle Mosaic while using Paychex’s existing Single Sign-On (SSO) capabilities proved to be an excellent solution.

What are these event all about?

Did you know that while women make up more than half of the US professional occupations, they only hold 24% of the jobs in high-tech?! Some think that women listen to the stereotype that women aren’t as good at math and science, and therefore don’t try them. Some think that women don’t want to go into such a demanding occupation that typically requires a lot of travel. But some think that it has to do with the fact that because there aren’t many women in the industry, there are no mentors and role models to look to. Whatever the reason, we would like to help the women in the high-tech industry to succeed by bringing them together to share their experiences, knowledge, and to support one another.

About the Glue Conference

As the “cloud” becomes a common platform, web applications still live in a “stovepipe” world. It’s not a question of “should we move to the cloud?” It’s a question of once some, or most, or all of our web applications live in the cloud, how do we handle the problems of scalability, security, identity, storage, integration and interoperability? What was the problem of “enterprise application integration” in the late 90s, is now the cambrian explosion of web-based applications that will demand similar levels of integration. The problem, put simply, is how to “glue” all of these apps, data, people, work-flows, and networks together. The answer is through new web development tools and open APIs.

Glue is the only conference devoted solely to this new problem-set facing architects, developers and integrators. At Glue, we’ll explore the new technologies that are forming around web applications in a post-cloud world. At Glue, we’ll aim to explore things like APIs, Web Protocols and Formats (JQuery, node.js, JSON, HTML5), Open Data sets, Platforms and Providers (PaaS, IaaS, etc), Cloud Storage and Database options, Cloud management frameworks, and Identity and Security.

Glue is about all of the bits and pieces, APIs and meta-data, standards and connectors that will help us to glue together the varying applications of a post-cloud world. If you’re a developer, architect, designer or implementer that’s living in this world, or just new to exploring it, Gluecon is the place for you.

When you prefer to hire a software development firm to write an application for you, On3 can help. Often, learning how to maintain a production application is a better transition for a new development team when the team lacks deep experience in the new tools.

Use our team to define project scope

On3 uses an iterative model because it is the most flexible and easiest for our clients. We work to understand and define what needs to be developed and then write down the requirements that we were able to identify. Next we analyze the technology environment, existing n-tiers, and communication frameworks available. We study and document the data and systems that will interact with the application in this phase. After that we can develop a project scope, work schedule, milestones, tasks, and statement of work to be reviewed and either accepted or rejected.

Use our team to develop the application

On3 developers use the requirements to build a prototype of the application that will eventually be deployed. After receiving feedback and revising the requirements and statement of work, we write the application, perform unit and systems testing, provide training and seek user acceptance. Please tell us what you want your software to do and we will help you build it or build it for you!

Contact On3 Today!

PARIS, April 27, 2011 — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced two initiatives to fuel the growth of cross-platform, cross-device applications, further deepening the company’s commitment to the application developer community.

OpenPlug Studio will now be available to developers free of charge with no feature limitations. OpenPlug Studio is a cross-platform development toolkit that allows developers to efficiently create native applications for smart phones, tablets and other web-connected devices from a single code base using well-known web development technologies such as JavaScript, ActionScript and XML. Developers can download OpenPlug Studio at http://developer.openplug.com

The company also launched a Certified OpenPlug Solutions Provider Program focused on application development and developer training. On3 is the first North American provider. In this program, we will work closely with Alcatel-Lucent teams to build mobile applications which integrate with enterprise information systems and leverage service providers’ network-based APIs to deliver a richer end user experience, while lowering total project costs for their clients. Additionally, we plan to organize instructor-led developer training courses to increase adoption among On3’s clients and the broader mobile application developer community.

“One of the things we set out to do when we created the Open API Platform was address the entire API and app ecosystem,” said Laura Merling, Senior Vice President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Application Enablement Strategy and Platform. “Making OpenPlug Studio free puts one of the industry’s most powerful tools into the hands of more developers. And building a formal partner program further entrenches our technology in successful applications and spreads the educational opportunities available to developers.”

Developers can catch the new OpenPlug Solutions Provider partners at several upcoming events:

Exuvis and Alcatel-Lucent will present together at ICMA’s “Classifieds: Recipes for Success” event on April 30, 2011, in Nice, France. Exuvis will detail how it used OpenPlug Studio to develop its Hebbes Immo classified ad publishing app.

On3 will host a pre-conference workshop on May 24, 2011, at the Alcatel-Lucent-sponsored Glue Conference in Broomfield, Colorado. The workshop is open to all conference attendees and will explore the process of developing native cross-platform applications with OpenPlug Studio.
